Name: Mer Shawn
Rank: Guardian Fleet Admiral
Affiliation: Guardian Force
Position: Senior Guardian Force command
Home World: Glas Dinnein
Close Associates: Admirals Ron Cloud and Dylan Cord
Mer Shawn sits at the top level of Guardian Force leadership. In Guardian Force, Darrell introduces him at Guardian Command Headquarters, working directly with Admiral Ron Cloud of Fleet Intelligence and Admiral Dylan Cord of Fleet Operations. Mer occupies the head of the conference table, giving us a clear picture of his senior command role.
Leadership
Mer is an experienced military commander, but he isn't portrayed as a distant ceremonial admiral. He personally evaluates intelligence, questions assumptions and makes decisions about Guardian Force's response to developing threats.
The discovery of the mysterious human-built probe demonstrates this. Mer brings Ron and Dylan together to determine what Guardian Force actually knows before deciding how to proceed. When the evidence proves the probe was built by humans, Mer initially pushes back against the ancient legends of First Home, calling them unsupported oral tradition. Ron and Dylan are more willing to entertain the possibility.
He wants evidence.
He's not closed-minded, but neither is he willing to turn mythology into fact simply because circumstances appear to fit it.
Relationship with Ron and Dylan
Mer, Ron and Dylan aren't simply fellow admirals. Darrell explicitly describes them as old friends, comfortable enough together that their senior-command meetings have an informal familiarity underneath the military structure. At the end of the novel, Darrell goes even further, describing the three as “all the best of friends.”

Ron Cloud: Fleet Intelligence
Dylan Cord: Fleet Operations
Together they form much of Guardian Force's senior military leadership.
Mer and Kellon
Mer also has a significant command relationship with Captain Kellon.
When Lan finally returns after nearly two years away, Mer immediately demands a status report, but his first substantive response is to recognize what Kellon and his crew accomplished. Lan returned combat-ready, with its crew intact after an extraordinary patrol, and Mer tells Kellon “well done” and calls their achievement commendable.
He's still the commanding admiral, however. Kellon is ordered to report to him personally upon returning to Glas Dinnein, and Mer expects a full and detailed report.
When Kellon finally arrives, Mer formally congratulates him on behalf of the senior leadership and extends those compliments to Lan, its Scouts, the crew and their visitors from Earth.
Political Role
Mer also operates at the boundary between the military and civilian government.
When Lan's discoveries concerning Earth reach Glas Dinnein, Mer personally appears before Admiral Secretary Eryan Kyrie and the Planetary Assembly leadership. He's willing to defend Guardian Force's decisions, including Kellon's distant reconnaissance mission, while still acknowledging civilian authority.
This makes him more than a battlefield commander. He's responsible for explaining and defending Guardian Force operations at the highest levels of government.
Core Mer Shawn Profile
Senior. Experienced. Evidence-driven. Authoritative. Loyal. Pragmatic. Comfortable exercising command, but willing to recognize initiative and accomplishment in officers beneath him.
There's also warmth underneath the rank. He maintains genuine friendships with Ron and Dylan and looks forward to joining Lan'sreturning crew for a cold brew after their mission.
